Best FTP program? Why some FTP programs suck...

In the last few days I've run into FTP programs in a hurry. And I've learned that many of these programs do not work as advertised.

These are all the programs I tried, or investigated.

  1. SmartFTP

  2. FTP Explorer

  3. Web CEO

  4. FTP Commander

  5. WS_FTP LE was highly recommended but is no longer available for free download. The new free download got very bad reviews on download.com so I did not test this program.

  6. FTP Voyager

  7. FlashFXP

I had 700 plus files to FTP and nearly all these programs I tried could not haul that load. Only 2 worked. The rest all followed a common pattern: They'd work for 10 minutes and then stop.

I don't know whether there's a setting in these programs that made them halt after 10 minutes, but frankly I could't spare the time or hassle to work it out.

Here ae the 2 that worked:

  1. FlashFXP

  2. FTP Voyager

FlashFXP was the final one I tried in desparation - it worked faster and better than any others. It was the only FTP program that transferred all 700 files without stopping.

FTP Voyager was the second best; It would FTP many files without stopping - more than any other FTP client - but after a certain number would just sit and do nothing. When this happenned, I stopped the FTP process and started the entire transfer again. This would work after 2 or 3 tries. But it was frustrating.

I got to one point and decided to leave it when it stopped, and I saw that it did restart itself. This was still a really slow process though. And frustrating to someone trying to get a job done.

This was still the best FTP tool I'd come across thus far. But in the end I decided I needed better from a $39.95 program so I decided try one more - FlashFXP.

FlashFXP worked in a problem free manner. It started, it quickly downloaded all 700 files, then it stopped. For that reason there is very little say about it except that it works, and I'm glad to have ended my search.

All programs I tried were freeware or free trial software.

Thanks to Scott Watermasysk for providing a page asking about the best FTP programs.

There you go - hope this helps you avoid my FTP heartaches.
