Ah... back from Spain.. One thing that vacations are good for...

I'm now back from our vacation in Spain. If you're thinking of a quiet holiday somewhere in the sun, I would highly recommend travelling to Fuertaventura. Its a really good place to go for a relaxing vacation. Many tourists are young families and also older couples. Lots of tourists are from UK, more are from Germany and a few of outers (very few) are from Scandanavia. I'll post some photos of our trip soon including our very interesting encounter with some "roadside chipmunks".

Anyway if there's one thing that holidays are good for its getting some distance from your website aims and the technology and the "noise" of the web. In short vacations are very good for planning and dreaming and forward scheduling.

I've decided -- no I've clearly seen -- that for the next few months I have to spend time focussing on web design.

I used Sitesell to build my other website so I never learned to write HTML or CSS, or to design banners or buttons. Sitesell is similar to Movable type in that you don't need to write your own HTML.

The problem comes when you want to move to another platform. You will find that you need to known some HTML and web design to get the flexiblity you want.

So since I'll be moving permanently soon, off the Sitesell platform, I'll need to redesign my SS site from the ground up. Thankfully the words (articles) are aready in place, so its just the design that I'll need to produce.

My first task will be redesigning this Movable type blog site using CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). I've now learnt the basics of CSS and should now try to apply it. There's a very good basic tutorial on Cascading Style Sheets on Joe Bartas site Pagetutor.com. I would highly recommend that site as a place to go learn the rudiments of CSS, or even HTML for that matter.

I'm hoping to show any newbies out there that learning CSS and HTML is not as hard as you might think.

List of Tasks/Todo

  1. Understand the Movable Type format code for this site
  2. Understand the Movable Type CSS/stylesheet for this site
  3. Mess about and change the format and stylesheet to see what happens
  4. Create a "final" new pacemake.com site with the new fonts and colors
  5. Finally upload some photos -- maybe learn a little photo design

My next tasks will be to redesign my other websites starting with my Sitesell site which has to be moved before the renewal deadline in January '05.
