Blog and Ping Testing - My Conclusion: Pinging Yahoo does not work

Over the last 5 days I have tested a scenario: If I write blog posts and ping many relevant blog channels, then I will be able to attract all the Search Engine spiders, including (the sluggish) Yahoo Slurp bot.

Having tested, my conclusion is that:

Pinging attracts the Google and MSN spiders. Without doing any additional linking I have had my blog posts indexed within 2 days on Google and MSN.

Pinging alone does NOT attract the Yahoo spider. Many people talk about using "Blog and pinging" to get pages of new sites crawled and indexed rapidly by the Yahoo spider.

But my belief from testing is that Pinging alone is not what will get you indexed in Yahoo.

Now my (untested) speculation is that what makes these Blog and Ping programs work is (a) first attract the Yahoo spider by including a new blog in MyYahoo. (b) Next regularly post to keep the spider returning on a regular basis.

I deliberately carried out Ping tests after a period in which I had done no posting for a while. Googlebot returned when I pinged but Yahoo Slurp didn't.

My belief now, is that as far as Yahoo is concerned the process of blog spider-baiting is not based on pinging but rather on regular posting after the first visit from their bot. This process should actually be called Blog and blog, not Blog and Ping.

As a footnote, I find it easy to attract spiders to a blog through the usual activities of commenting and trackback-ing posts from other blogs. There are more and more opportunties to do this every day.
