Why I requested a Refund of my Movable Type License

I decided to request a refund of the unlimited personal license for Movable Type I bought several weeks ago.

On purchasing this license I assumed I could use it multiple domains from one installation, if those were on the same hosting account.

Movable Type did not install on multiple domains hosted in the same reseller hosting account.

After back and forth with this with a support person through the personal support service, another more senior technician came along and basically said that I'd need single installations for each domain.

Ha! That is quite funny. Even if you had all the cash in the world - and the cash required is a lot - you'd never want to install MT once for each domain because the hassle of installation would be just too much. Six Apart don't realize that some people have multiple domains.

I requested a refund on Friday 11 March. Today 3 working days after, it is seeming oh so very hard for the Six Apart guys to process my order through their systems. Oh, poor Six Apart.

But that just about sums up the personal support I received. Willing enough but somehow lacking...

I think if they want to charge $97 for a license they really ought to signifantly improve their software and also give a higher level of support.

In conclusion I would say that if you are fairly techie webmaster and you have multiple sites, MT - both the level of the tool and the level of the support available - will not be suitable for you.

For one single site, MT is great. But Wordpress might be just as good and even while the basic versions of both are free, Wordpress seems to involve less installation hassle.

The full functional download of Movable type does not contain full functionality to combat spam. Wordpress does. This means that for multiple sites you'll have to download and install (the absolutely fantastic) MT blacklist for each one.

This is unmanageable for multiple sites (if you ignore the money issue).

But why go through the hassle of this when Wordpress is available? As far as I know I can see no reason for choosing MT over Wordpress - not even the SEO reasons that some people may talk about.
